The History of Neapolitan Pizza

The history of pizza begins back with the Ancient Greeks who had a flatbread called plakous, flavoured with various toppings like herbs, onion and garlic.

Soldiers of the Persian King Darius the Great (521-486 B.C.) baked a kind of flatbread on their shields and then covered it with lard and dates for long marches. It wasn’t until the late 18th century where peasants in the Naples area decided to add tomatoes to their flatbread that the modern pizza was born.

Until then, tomatoes, which were brought back from Peru by European explorers in the 16th century, were believed to be poisonous by many Europeans. The dish gained in popularity, and soon Pizza became a tourist attraction as visitors to Naples ventured into the poorer areas of the city in order to try the local specialty.
